Hooked on Crochet

 Denise tells us how she got interested in crochet.

What got you interested in crochet?

I first became interested in crocheting when I was about 12 years old after seeing what a neighbour had crocheted. She kindly taught me the basic double crochet stitch. I had only ever made 'granny squares' that can be sewn together to make a blanket.

How did you learn to crochet?

In 2018 I went to my first crochet class with my friend Patsy, on the Isle of Wight. I followed a pattern from the Coastal Crochet website. The pattern taught me different stitches and I made a baby blanket which took me about a week to complete, working on it every evening. 

Where do you buy your crochet supplies?

I buy cotton yarn and wool from various internet sites and also from a stall in Leeds market. I have also purchased crochet hooks, cases, tutorial books and accessories from internet sites.

What is your favourite design?

My favourite thing is a grey and lilac octopus which I made for my great nephew when he was born. I also really enjoyed making various beanie hats for a premature baby unit. 

What is the hardest part of crocheting?

The hardest thing about crocheting is learning new stitches - but there are lots of tutorials online to help master them. I find it easier to watch a video rather than follow a pattern or a new stitch from a book.

What tips would you pass on to someone who wants to start crocheting?

My tip for a beginner is to buy quality yarn and a good set of crochet hooks. You can also buy tutorial books from the internet or craft shops. Watching online tutorials is also a good place to start.
